Description

New tpb – retail 13.99 – Indefensible (5-issue mini; w Keith Giffen & J. M. DeMatteis; a Kevin McGuire). [From Marvel Comics: Wong possessed by Nightmare! Dormammu and Umar in unholy alliance! The Hulk and the Sub-Mariner at each other’s throats! The Silver Surfer…uh…surfing. Can Doctor Strange reunite the Defenders and save “Reality As We Know It?” Only the Ancient One knows for sure!] Book of the Week 4/29/06: Writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis have developed a style they now call Bwa-Ha-Ha comics, in which they take either existing characters or knock-offs, walk a fine line between the actual characters and parodies of them, and blend relatively conventional plots with not entirely serious treatments. The result is usually something that would read pretty well if it were played straight, not played straight, and funny as hell. In this story, The Dread Dormammu (an ego-maniacal but rather dim evil overlord) and his sister Umar (not as powerful, but just as ambitious, and a lot smarter and more manipulative) try yet again to take over the universe. Standing in their way is a very arch Dr. Strange, the rude and arrogant Sub-Mariner, the dorky and hapless Bruce Banner with his big, green, anti-social counterpart, and the Silver Surfer, who really doesn’t have anything to do with the story, spending his time hanging out on the beach with a bunch of surfer dudes. A recurring theme of the series is the notion that these people really don’t belong on a team together. As a bonus, frequent Bwa-Ha-Ha artist Kevin Maguire brings his astonishing ability to render facial expressions. If you’re in the mood for snorts of laughter, and don’t have a deep and abiding love and respect for the Defenders, give this book a try.
